The famous Dutch football player Robin van Persie was born on the 6th of August, 1983, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. His mother, Jose Ras was a painter and he was brought up by his father, Bob, who was a sculptor. He grew up with his sisters, Lily and Kiki. Being the son of two artists, he was encouraged in his early days, to use his hands much in creative work. However, Robin had more skill in using his feet, as he played football on the streets as a child. Robin was found most of the times outside the classrooms, due to his misbehavior in class. This led to his close friendship with 40 year old Sietje Moush, the school’s caretaker. In his 14th age, Robin van Persie was advised by Moush to take up his studies seriously rather than going to night clubs, which eventually changed the behavior of Robin, helping him to start his professional football career. His style of playing and his ability have taken him to a level of comparing him to Dutch legend, Marco van Basten. Van Persie married his long time girl friend, Bouchra and has two children, a son named Shaqueel, born in 2006 and a daughter Dina Layla, born in 2009.
As a youth player, in 1998, Van Persie joined the Dutch side Excelsior. After some dispute with the coaches at the club in 1999, he then signed for Feyenoord, as a youth player. Very soon Van Persie was into the first team, due to the injury problems of other players in the squad and he made his first debut at the age of 17, continuing to make 15 first team appearances. He was awarded the prestigious Best Young Talent award, given by the KNVB for the 2001-02 season, for his performance in the 3-2 UEFA Cup Final victory over Borussia Dortmund, on the 8th of May, 2002.
At the beginning of the 2002-03 season, Van Persie signed a professional three- and-a-half year deal with Feyenoord, at the age of 18. But again Van Persie had some clashes with the club manager Bert van Marwijk. He completed the season with 16 goals in 28 appearances. At the age of 19, when Van Persie was playing in a notable match between Feyenoord reserves and Ajax reserves, a group of football hooligans entered the field and attacked the Feyenoord players. Even though Van Persie had many difficulties at the club level; he earned many caps for Netherlands under 19 and under 21 teams. He played 28 League matches, but scored only 6 goals in 2003-04 season, three goals lesser than the previous season.
During the January transfer window of 2004, Arsenal signed Van Persie. On May 17, 2004, Van Persie moved to the Premier League side Arsenal for £2.75 million as a long time replacement for Dennis Bargkamp. Then Arsenal signed Spanish forward Jose Antonio Reves, leaving the two to battle for playing time. On the 8th of August 2004, Van Persie made his debut and won a trophy in the 3-1 FA Community Shield victory over the Manchester United. Robin came as a substitute player in that match. Van Persie had to spend most of his time in bench during the 2004-05 season. He made his competitive debut on 27th October, by scoring the Arsenal opening goal in a 2-1 League cup win over Manchester City. Van Persie was sent off for the first time in an Arsenal shirt, on 26th February during a 1-1 road draw with Southampton, following a lunge at left back Graeme Le Saux, for which Wenger yelled at Van Persie from the sidelines. He had many injuries which restricted him to play further matches in that season. He completed with 10 goals in 41 appearances in 2004-05.
Robin Van Persie had a good start in the 2005-06 season. He was awarded the Player of the month for November 2005, after eight goals in eight starts and also was rewarded with five years contract extension until 2011 on 4th January. However Van Persie was injured, in two days after signing the contract. Robin managed to play the next three matches with a hole cut in his shoe to relieve the pain but then he was rested for the Arsenal’s Premier League against West Ham United on 1st of February. He was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s first Champions League final. In the end of the season Van Persie had eleven goals in 38 appearances.
The 2006-07 season began with an airborne volley against Charlton Athletic. Wrenger named it “the goal of a lifetime” and it was later named BBC Sport’s “Goal of the month” for September. Van Persie also capped of the calendar year by being named the 2006 Rotterdam Sportsman of the year. Then his season ended early for the second time, due to the fracture in the right foot. Even though Van Persie was injured and rested for a large part of the season, he completed the season as Arsenal’s top goal scorer with 13 goals in 31 appearances.
In 2007-08 season, Robin Van Persie assumed the role as Arsenal’s main striker, due to the departure of Henry for Barcelona. He then hit seven goals, in ten regular-season games, and then due to the severe knee injury, he had to take a short rest for two months. He then played in Arsenal’s Champions League group and won over Steaua Bucuresti on 12th December. Van Persie also made his Premier league return, by winning against Chelsea. He was again sidelined due to injury until January. Thus in this season, he was only with 9 goals in 23 appearances.
On 31st August, Van Persie opened his 2008-09 account with a brace in Arsenal’s 3-0 league victory over Newcastle United. Robin Van Persie scored his 50th career Arsenal goal on October 29th in a 4-4 home draw with North London derby rivals Tottenham. Unfortunately Van Persie was hit with his first red card of the season on November 1st, after knocking down goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, with a shoulder charge in a 2-1 loss to Stoke City, for which Sorensen later admitted to teasing Van Persie in an attempt to provoke a reaction. On December 21st 2008, Robin scored a spectacular goal against Liverpool, which became his second career BBC Goal of the month. For the first time Robin captained Arsenal on 3rd January 2009, as captain Cesc Fabregas was injured. In January 2009, every Arsenal goal was either scored or assisted by Van Persie, which earned him the club’s Player of the Month award. On the final day of the Premier league, Van Persie scored a brace against Stoke City, which made him Arsenal’s top scorer for the second time in his career. Robin had his best season overall for Arsenal as he scored 11 Premier league goals, with a league-leading 11 assists and a career best of 20 goals in all competitions. With all these victory, he was named the 2008-09 Arsenal.com Player of the Season.
In July 2009, as only one year was remaining on his contract, Van Persie signed a new long term contract with his club. The departure of Emmanuel Adebayor also made Van Persie the main striker in Arsenal team. He scored his first goal of the season in the 4-2 loss at Eastlands to Manchester City. He then scored goals against Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United, Fulham, Olympiacos, Tottenham and Birmingham City. He was named Barclays Player of the Month for October. Again he was injured and was rested for five months. He completed his 2009-10 season with 10 goals in 20 appearances, along with 8 assists.
In the beginning of the 2010-11 season, Van Persie changed his squad number to 10, which was previously worn by Arsenal and Netherlands legend Dennis Bergkamp. In this season, Robin made his 200th appearance on 28th August, but then in the same match he suffered severe ankle injury, which placed him in the sidelines. He scored his first goal for the season on 1st January 2011, in a 3-0 win over Birmingham City. Again he added two more goals on 15th January in a comfortable 3-0 win over West Ham, which made him the fourth Dutchman to reach 50 goals in England’s Top division. He scored ten goals between 1st January and 12th February, creating a new Premier League record for most goals scored in the first two months of a calendar year. On 27th February 2011, Robin captained Arsenal at Wembley Stadium in the League Cup Final. He scored his first goal at Wembley and it was his first in a cup final for Arsenal. After a three weeks rest, he then returned for the Camp Nau, where he received a yellow card in the first half for a foul and again in the second half, he was sent off after receiving second yellow card. On 24th April 2011, he became the first player to score in seven successive Premier League away games, when he scored against Bolton, beating Didier Drogba’s record that was on six successive away games, between August and November 2009. On the last game of the season away at Fulham, Robin managed to score his 9th consecutive away match, bringing his goal tally for the season to a personal record of 18 league goals. He also equaled the record held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry by scoring 18 league goals from the turn of the year to the end of the season. He finished the season with just two goals behind joint league top scorers, Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov in the race for the golden boot. Van Persie was voted second best player of the 2010-11 season on Arsenal’s official website and he also received the team’s Goal of the Season award, for his audacious strike in the 2-1 victory over Barcelona in Champions League.
Being the vice captain in 2010-11, Van Persie was promoted to club’s captain at the start of 2011-2012, with the transfer of Cesc Fabregas to FC Barcelona. On August 24th he scored his first goal for the season in the second leg of Arsenal’s 2-1 away victory against Udinese in Champions league off match. On the 24th of September, Robin scored twice against Bolton Wanderers to raise his tally for Arsenal to 100 goals He became the 17th player to reach this milestone. On 29Th October, Van Persie continued his scoring run for Arsenal, by scoring a hat-trick in Arsenal’s 5-3 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. With his consistent performance and scoring capabilities, he was named the Premier League Player of the Month for the month of October. He also scored the Arsenal’s opening goal in a 3-0 win over West Brom, on the 5th November with two assists.
On the 29th of January, Van Persie rescued his team by scoring two penalties against Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup. He helped Arsenal to take a 3-2 with but then he lost the Man of the match after falling 2-0 down. It was Persie’s 120th goal in an Arsenal shirt equalizing fellow Dutch legend Dennis Bergkamp’s total. On the 4th of February in 2012 he overtook Bergkamp as the 10th highest scorer in Arsenal history by scoring another hat trick when Arsenal beat Blackburn with 7-1 at home.
He was credited with two assists in the game as he helped Alex Oxlade Chamberlain’s first Premier league goal and he was helped Thierry Henry to score his first premier league goal by unselfishly passing the ball to him. Van Persie became the second player to score against 17 different Premier League opponents in a single campaign. Van Persie finished as the top goal scorer in the Premier League with 30 goals and also became the Arsenal’s 8th all time top scorer with an incredible 132 goals. On the 4th of July 2012 Van Persie announced that he will not sign any new contract with Arsenal.
On the 15th of August Arsenal announced that Van Persie will be leaving to Manchester United but then Van Persie did not tell anything from his side personally. The on the 17th of August he was transferred to the Manchester United for an initial of 22.5 million Euros with an addition of 1.5 million Euro to follow if United won a Premier League or Champions League title within the next four years. He signed a four year contract keeping him within the Manchester United club till June 2016.
On the 20th of August Van Persie made his first debut as a player of Manchester United in the 68th minute as a substitute for Danny Welbeck. Five days latter Van Persie hit his first goal for the Manchester United. This match was United’s first 3-2 victory over Fulham. On the 2nd of September in 2012, Van Persie scored his first hat trick for Manchester United in another 3-2 victory match against Southampton. His third goal in this match was his 100th goal in the Premier’s League.
On the 23rd of September netted a goal out of penalty to give United a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield. On the 20th October he helped the Manchester United to a 4-2 win over the Stoke City. In the next premier league he played a goal by hitting the ball against the post which cannoned off David Luiz and went into the net. On the 3rd of November he played against his former team Arsenal and defeated them with a 2-1 victory. By this victory he proved that he has scored against the entire 20 Premier league Clubs. On the 9th of December he hit a last minute winner shot from a free kick in 3-2 victory over Manchester City. This was his Manchester Derby debut. This goal was City’s unbeaten Premier league record in 2012 – 2013 season and also their unbeaten home record.
Robin Van Persie took part in 2004 and 2006 European Championship qualifying. He earned his first caps for the Netherlands in less than a span of week, first in a 2-0 win over Romania in 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying, on 4th June 2005 and in another qualifier, which was held four days later against Finland. In this match, Robin van Persie scored his first International goal in a 4-0 victory. On June 13th, 2005, while Van Persie was in Rotterdam with Dutch national team for 2006 World cup qualifiers, he was arrested on suspicion of raping former Miss Nigeria Holland Sandra Krijgsman by the Dutch police. He was held fourteen nights in prison, but then was released without charge. In February 2006, the case was completely dismissed by the Dutch Public prosecution Service after complete investigations. Van Persie was a twitter user but he deleted his account on the 9th of January in 2013.
